You have to learn Palm Muting Print E-mail
You have to learn Palm Muting. It is so essential to create better rhythm and direction of a song. Yes, no effect box can do this for you. I took this technique for granted for so long and it is about time for me to master it. I quickly realized it is not an easy skill to master once I started working on it. The key is where you place your palm to create muting effect. It took me for long time to find that sweet spot for my strat. As I move along the different strings, I have to find that sweet spots and it is challenging while playing a song.

These are few videos that I found helpful. Enjoy, and practice, practice, & practice...

Only A God Like You Tab - Intro Print E-mail

I have been looking to learn "Only A God Like You" by Tommy Walker for the longest time. Some tabs online has not really satisfy me and was beyond my skill level. So I tried to duplicate the sound as much as I can and this tab is the result of that quest. See below my YouTube video and the tab. I know it is not the best sound nor close to the original but it works. I am still working on the beat. So please excuse my timing. Enjoy!

Blessed Be Your Name - A Power Chord Progression Print E-mail
I was trying to figure out how to best play this song. Since my approach is always how to play the simplest way, I had to figure out the power chords to start with. It turns out it was indeed very simple and sounded good. I think anyone can play this song. It is the same chord progression over and over again and I thought it is an excellent power chords practice song. We sing this song in A, which seems work well with our congregation. I attached the chord sheet below.  This is a good starting point and you can build the song upon these power chords. Let me know how it goes!

Here is the chord chart. Just repeat these chords over and over again. Enjoy!

Band on the Run with Bob Kauflin Print E-mail

I stumbled upon this video seminar from Bob Kauflin from Sovereign Grace Ministry. He makes a lot of sense about leading worship and band dynamics. It taught me some good insights for each instruments and their parts and contribution to a band. He illustrates this with some examples.  It was once again a good reminder what is really important in leading worship. Some of his points were as follows.  I liked his second point the best. I like his emphasis on simplicity.

1. Listen to others as much as yourself
2. Content is the king everything serves the lyrics
3. Less is More, learn the beauty of playing nothing
4. Play a part not the chart, think about how to make the part memorable

G Progression - Electric guitar III Print E-mail
Last week I promised to share the power chords that I learned. I was trying out more power chords on G while practicing "You Are Worthy of My Praise" by David Ruis. This is not a typical G progression song. As usual, I tried to minimize my left hand movement as much as I could. Of course, you can move same shape on the fret board for different keys. The verse goes G - F - C - G - Am7 - D [2X] and chorus goes G - D/F# - C2 - Am7 - D - G - D/F# - C2 - Am7 - D - G

Here is how it looks like on the fret.

Intro

Verse (Repeat this twice)

Chorus (Repeat this twice)

Download the chord sheet below for your practice. Enjoy!

Worship Vocal Lesson Print E-mail
I stumbled upon this video on vocal lesson for worship leading. It was very helpful. I tend to just "sing" without any preparations. (I messed up on singing last week, remember?) Ben Cantelon is playing keyboard and sings in this video. I also pleasantly surprised by the worship leaders' own tips at the end of the video. Tim Neufeld from Starfield, Leeland Mooring, Tommy Walker, and Brenton Brown give practical advice.

Happy Day - Tim Hughes (C Progression) Print E-mail
I have been using this shape a lot in all my songs these days. Here is an example of this shape on C progression. You can go up on the fret board to change the key to D, E, G and so on. I used this on the intro for Tim Hughes "Happy Day" on Easter.

Intro for Tim Hughes' "Happy Day", it goes like C5-F5-Am-F5 progression twice. Let me know how it works for you!

Awesome is the Lord Most High - Chris Tomlin Print E-mail

I promised to go over an actual praise song that we can use G progressions. I chose "Awesome is the Lord Most High" by Chris Tomlin in See the Morning.
If you haven't, refer to 2 lessons about G progressions in Lesson 'N Tips section.

Here is the song in key of G.

I changed the pitch of the song so that it will fit to G progrssions. As you already know, we as normal people don't have a range like Chris Tomlin.

Try following along with the song and the progressions below.

Verse - Triad

Chorus

Make some electric guitarist faces! Let me know how it goes. Good luck and have fun!
Here is Praise Weekly's Visual Chords for the song.
